Planning a Family Trip to Toronto with Kid-Approved Activities and Meals

With trips to America plummeting in popularity due to cost, political uncertainty and personal security reasons, Canada is picking up the slack as a booming destination for British families. The country overall benefits from a rising reputation, and cities like Toronto have a great amount to offer travellers of all ages.

With flights from most major UK cities, seasoned travellers will have planned plenty to occupy the family for the 7.5-to-8.5-hour trip. Air Transat is picking up a growing reputation as a family-friendly, long-haul airline, with budget prices a fraction of the major airlines.

Whatever your schedule, we highlight some of the things to do and places to eat that will make a trip to Toronto truly memorable.

A Warm Toronto Welcome for Families

Once your family hits Canadian soil, they won’t want to waste any time, with a quick 30-minute trip from Pearson Airport to downtown Toronto and the city’s huge number of hotels. Once your family is raring to go, use the subway or streetcars to get around quickly. There are plenty of family must-see attractions, including Niagara Falls (best visited by bus or train) and heading up the more accessible CN Tower, all depending on the weather.

But Toronto is also home to a great number of family attractions. Nature lovers will enjoy Ripley’s Aquarium and Toronto Zoo, where the Canadian Domain is home to local flora and fauna like racoons, wood bison, eagles and deer.

Nerdier members will love a visit to Ontario’s Science Centre that has endless family-friendly interactive exhibits with a sci-fi feel. Toronto also has a booming role in movies and TV shows, and fans can take various tours around the production centres and famous landmark scenes as part of an organised trip.

At some point the adventure will come grinding to a halt as family members demand food and there are plenty of the best restaurants in Toronto to choose from.

Eat Canadian With the Family

Kids eat free at many Toronto restaurants, with Eataly and The Ace being well known for entertaining younger diners. St. Lawrence Market has literally something for every taste with endless choice, which should cater for younger picky eaters

If you want to eat local, then you can grab a bison burger at Tea-N-Bannock. Or enjoy blueberry buttermilk pancakes at Mildred's Temple Kitchen, famed for their brunches and located in the charming Liberty Village.

Also in the Village, if you fancy something a little closer to home, try the Brazen Head Irish Pub. It has a familiar menu and plenty of European sports across their big screens. From there you can head to the Distillery District, which is a traffic-free zone. Home to street art, musicians, indie and retro shops, everyone should find a fond memory here to take home.

Back on the family fun trail, while you’re not in the US, you can still enjoy some US-centric sports. With Toronto sporting the MLB’s Blue Jays, the NBA’s Raptors and the NHL’s Maple Leafs for an exciting afternoon or evening depending on the season. Or, you can go local (and cheaper), cheering on the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League or the Toronto Sceptres women’s hockey team, among many others.

If you have time to head outside of the city, and want a very different destination, Ontario’s Fort William Historical Park at Thunder Bay is great for history buffs, showing the harsh life in a 19th-century fur trading post. It’s just a two-hour flight, which really shows how vast Canada is, but it’s still well worth a day trip, especially when exploring historical spots as part of your Places to Visit in Canada During Summer itinerary.

To close out the trip, every visit to Toronto has to include the Harbourfront with boat trips around the islands, plenty of cultural festivals and plenty of little parks to enjoy. One example is the Music Garden where free concerts take place and the musical-themed design is great to explore. KidSpark is a youth-themed science event.

In between all these locations are endless more eateries, events and destinations you might discover that can make even a well-planned trip feel spontaneous and delightful, all packaged by the very friendly natives who make great hosts, resulting in Toronto being voted the friendliest city in the world.
